A Witness to Route Development: Connecting Stories Over the Past Six Decades
On 3 March 1966, Air New Zealand's first DC-8 aircraft arrived in Hong Kong from Auckland, officially inaugurating a new chapter in long-haul Asia-Pacific travel. This inaugural flight landed at the former Kai Tak Airport; the stunning scene of the plane descending amidst the Hong Kong buildings has long become one of the most iconic moments in the history of Hong Kong aviation. Since then, Air New Zealand has continuously upgraded its fleet and services: DC-10 direct flights were introduced in 1978, followed by the introduction of the Boeing 747 in 1985, the switch to the Boeing 767 in 1995, and an increase to daily flights in 2003; and from 2013 onwards, the airline strengthened flight connections and services through a strategic alliance with CATHAY PAC AIR, operating up to 16 weekly flights between the two cities during peak periods. Currently, the annual passenger volume on this route has exceeded 0.35 million, further solidifying Hong Kong's position as Air New Zealand's Asian hub.
In terms of cargo, Air New Zealand is also an important pillar of trade between the two regions. As of 2025, the airline transports over 10,000 tons of cargo annually, including approximately 900 tons of milk powder, 133 tons of eggs, 85 tons of mussels, 210 tons of meat, and 159 tons of avocados, bringing high-quality New Zealand produce to the tables of Hong Kong citizens.
Scott Wilkinson, Air New Zealand's Commercial Director, said that this 60th anniversary is of great significance to the airline and demonstrates our commitment to Hong Kong.
'Over the past 60 years, this route between Hong Kong and Auckland has not only spanned the Pacific Ocean but also connected the people, cultures, and opportunities of the two places. This milestone represents the deep bond between New Zealand and Hong Kong, and it is only because of the trust of our passengers that we have been able to come this far. We are proud of this remarkable record and look forward to continuing to bring more wonderful journeys to travelers from both places in the future.'
